What Is The Difference Between Apraxia And Autism?

May 14th, 2008 RachelEvans Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

Apraxia and autism are two entirely different neurological disorders which can occur in a child independently of one another, or together in the same child. While autism’s symptoms can impact and impair many different systems, behaviors, and thought patterns, apraxia occurs when the child struggles to plan and carry out voluntary physical movements.

In terms of gross motor skills, apraxia may impact a child’s capabilities to stand up, sit in a chair, or catch a ball and with fine motor skills, a child may not be able to zip up a jacket, button a shirt, write or print, or even point at an object.

Children with apraxia may also struggle to produce sound patterns to make words, or even coordinate the various speech mechanisms to make the individual speech sounds such as the difference between a “g” and a “b” sound, or the hum of an “m” sound. Even when a sound is modeled, a child with apraxia may not be able to mimic the same sound.

However, though these symptoms may also cross over into autism, there remain important differences between the two conditions. For example, when a child has only apraxia it is only the motor functioning and not the social and emotional skills that are impacted, as is often not the case with autism.

Apraxia and autism can become difficult to tell from one another when the child is exhibiting symptoms of verbal apraxia (officially known as oral-motor apraxia). The reason for this is that children with either condition can be very aware of their struggle to communicate verbally, and therefore they may choose to avoid having to talk by staying away from social situations. However, in the case of verbal apraxia, if you play with your child and don’t demand speech from him or her, you may find that they begin playing actively and engage others in their play.

The child usually experiences relief from being able to socialize and have contact with others without being required to talk, which is frustrating for them and can create a fear of failure. Often, with these children, when they are allowed to select the type of play and are allowed to go without having to speak, the relief and comfort they feel can make them more open to accepting the slow introduction of new sounds and syllables, which may eventually bring about simple words into their favorite games and play. Encouragement to vocalize or verbalize should be gentle in both apraxia and autism, and should be gradual, tailored to the pace of success rather than to a schedule.

In both motor apraxia and autism, children show social interaction problems, but in the case of motor apraxia, this is normally because they are not always capable of performing the physical movements that allows them access to others. However, motor apraxia won’t usually make a child want to avoid social interaction altogether, such as failing to make eye contact, or specifically moving away from other people.

It is easy to see why there is so much confusion between apraxia and autism spectrum disorders. Especially considering children with these conditions can also both exhibit signs of over-reactivity to sensations. However, there are differences between the two and it is important to speak to your doctor or a specialist if you are unsure. Your doctor will be able to determine which condition your child may have, or if both are present.

Is Red Clover A Good Gout Herbal Medicine?

May 14th, 2008 LisaMcDowell Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

Red clover has been used traditionally as gout herbal medicine for centuries due to its ability to remove toxins from the body. However, using red clover isn’t without its side effects. Scientists are now seeing that red clover thins the blood, so it should not be taken without the guidance of a doctor or other health professional. If you are already on anticoagulant medicine, red clover should not be used.

The properties within red clover that make it an effective gout herbal medicine are isoflavones. The isoflavones levels in red clover are 100 times higher than those of soy. This helps to heal inflammatory conditions, including gout, but also arthritis and eczema.

As a herbal medicine, red clover is also known as:

- Meadow clover

- Cow clover

- Purple clover

- Trifolium pratense (Latin name)

- Trefoil

- Wild clover

Red cover belongs to the pea family. It helps with the elimination of uric acid, which is important to the treatment of gout, since symptoms are a result of a buildup of uric acid causing crystal formation on the joints. Therefore, as red clover helps to eliminate levels of uric acid in the blood, the body has a reduced chance of experiencing a build up of uric acid therefore, reducing the likelihood of a gout attack.

Before taking red clover, be sure to speak to your health specialist, as you should before taking any new herb or supplement. As a gout herbal medicine, red clover is available in many different forms. These include:

- Teas

- Tinctures

- Capsules

- Tablets

- Liquid extracts

- Isoflaven standardized extracts

- Topical ointments

When taken as tea, simply use one to two teaspoons of dried red clover flowers in a mug (8 ounces) of hot water; two to three cups should be taken daily. Or, red clover extract can be mixed into a regular cup of tea.

Red clover in capsule form is usually taken in doses of 50mg to 150mg daily. If the capsules are red clover isoflavone extracts, then 28mg to 85mg is the normal daily dose. This means that two to three capsules will likely be required. For individual dosage instruction speak to a doctor.

For a direct topical treatment, red clover ointment or cream can be applied directly to the affected area. However, take care not to apply to any area where there is broken skin.

Red clover tincture should be thirty percent alcohol (1:5), and is taken in hot water as a tea with usually between sixty to one hundred drops (3 to 5 mL), three times every day.

Red clover herbal products are available at many natural and herbal stores. It is quite a common item so should be available in several forms at your local health shop.

Be aware of the possible side effects of gout herbal medicine made with red clover. General side effects can include nausea, headache, and rash. Infertility has also been witnessed in animals that graze on red clover patches. For more information please speak to a health professional.

Cordless And Portable Hair Dryers

May 14th, 2008 KristyKlien Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Though, there is a large range of hair dryers available for your hair styling, but few of them are far better than others due to their extraordinary features. A cordless hair dryer is one such hair dryer, which is known for its convenience and portability. The cordless and portable hair dryer is a precious and very useful invention as far as the portability is concerned. You can always carry this hair dryer anywhere you travel and the cordless features of this hair dryer enable you to perform your favorite hair styles even at the most scarce and remote locations. Moreover, it provides easier and more convenient handling of the dryer to perform the styling of your hair.

A cordless hair dryer has been designed in such a manner that it serves your hairstyling task more conveniently. The assembling line of the cordless hair dryer includes a renewable power source such as a rechargeable battery which enables the dryer to use at any place even without attaching to an electric point. And, once the battery is exhausted, it can easily be recharged at your convenience. Then, its motor assembly has also been configured with a flow controller and a temperature controller. Also, the hose of a cordless hair dryer has also been configured with a cap with a plurality of apertures for varied dispensing of airflow. Then, the other assembling parts of a cordless hairdryer include a fan, heating element and a switch to put the hair dryer on and off.

Many people tend to wash their hair regularly, and thus require a hair dryer to quick-dry their hair. In addition, the professional hair-stylists also use hair dryers to style people’s hair after a cut. The conventional hair dryers pose many limitations such as the requirement of a 120 volt or 220 volt electrical supply and the need to remain connected to the power supply outlet with a cord. If by any chance, an electrical outlet is not available, the conventional hair dryer cannot function without current. So, a conventional hair dryer lacks the portability.

Also, many accidents were witnessed in the latest past, most of which took place when a conventional hair dryer came in contact with water and caused injuries to the users. Since a traditional hair dryer is operated on a power supply of more than 1,000 watts, which is good enough to cause serious injuries, conventional hair dryers are not safe anymore. However, the issue of safety has been taken care of by a cordless hair dryer.

The cordless hair dryer is not as heavy as the traditional hair dryers are. So, it can be moved and used more conveniently than any other type of hair dryer. Moreover, it can be carried easily to any place, so portability is very much feasible. Also, this portable cordless hair dryer is well equipped with adjustable heat controls to help you getting a variety of hair styles.

The cordless and portable hair dryers are the most convenient and incomparable equipments. And, these hair dryers are as much efficient as the other conventional hair dryers are. You can plan to own a cordless and portable hair dryer if you are also facing difficulties in carrying your traditional hair dryer.

A Top St Lucia All Inclusive Vacation

May 14th, 2008 KellyJ Posted in Travel | No Comments »

A St Lucia All Inclusive Vacation at the East Winds Inn is unlike most all inclusive vacations in the Caribbean. Instead of a large hotel with literally hundreds of rooms, the East Winds Inn consists of only 30 rooms, 26 of which are in 13 individual duplex cottages, plus three ocean view rooms, and a suite, all set in the 12 acres of luxurious tropical gardens. In other words the East Winds Inn is small, certainly elegant, and described by many of its returning guests as a true Caribbean paradise.

It is one of longest established resorts in St Lucia, and it sits on one of its best beautiful bays, and is the ideal destination for those people who enjoy luxury, and as such is probably the perfect choice for a St Lucia honeymoon.

If you have never booked an all inclusive holiday before, then forget about the large, definitely not upmarket hotels that feature all inclusive, because East Winds is very definitely not in that category at all. Here you will find a small intimate hotel, where you will meet and enjoy the company of like minded people who you will happily socialize with.

You need not spend a dime whilst you are here, because everything you could want or need is included in the price you paid before you left home! Everything about East Winds Inn is five star, from the accommodation, to the food, the alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. In fact the food is simply outstanding, with the high spot of the week being the Friday night Barbecue.

As far as East Winds Inn being a St Lucia honeymoon destination, it is just about perfect. Being small lends itself to being romantic, and the lush tropical grounds with the accommodation units scattered throughout, private, and partly concealed, is romantic in itself. There is a carefully created and delightful charm about the place that sets it apart without taking into account the meals, and the beautiful bay. The resort is just so Caribbean, without any of the concrete jungle that has destroyed so many acres of St Lucia and other Caribbean islands.

Another outstanding feature is the staff. Unlike other resorts they so obviously care about where they work, and their clients, and try hard to please all of the time. For honeymooners one of the great things about a small resort is that you can choose to have private time and know you won’t be disturbed, or you can be as sociable as you want.

It is fair to say that the age group of the guests is veering towards middle age, but most are young at heart.

To summarize, East Winds Inn could well be described as a little piece of heaven on St Lucia. It has to be the top or close to being the top all inclusive hotel in the Caribbean. The food is mouth watering the environment pristine, the gardens beautifully tended and lush, and you will be give such a warm welcome, which will continue throughout your stay. If you appreciate understated elegance, then East Winds Inn is the place for you.

Weekend Getaways

May 14th, 2008 DaveText Posted in Travel | No Comments »

Weekend getaways are perfect for people who might want to get out for a romantic retreat or for families who want to spend time with each other.

Weekend getaways are typically short and sweet trips to a nearby yet idyllic place. These trips are ideal for couples who just want to spend some time alone or for families who want to have a weekend together. Because the trip is just for the weekend, ideal spots are those that are easily accessible yet a little secluded so that they can have the feel of calm and relaxation.

Every autumn a lot of people start walking down hiking trails to get ready for a hibernating winter. Few landscape scenes can equal the magnificence of pine trees covered with fresh snow. Wintertime with its many holidays, and endless opportunities for entertainment and outdoor sports proves to be an attractive time to explore countries and go on a weekend getaway. Getting a rustic cabin somewhere in the forest near a lake is an ideal spot for weekend getaways. Pleasant promenades, skiing in winter, and relaxing in the beautifully landscaped garden are some of the many activities one can participate in.

For couples that want to get away for a romantic weekend, lodging options can include a hotel, resort, motel, inn, cottage, cabin, campsite, or bed and breakfast. If couples are looking for some quality time alone to renew their relationship, a weekend getaway is perfect. Couples can enjoy recreation ranging from skiing to mountain biking. Couples can also opt to join activities that foster arts, culture and the human experience.

For people who want to enjoy the rustic charms of the West, mountain biking in Moab, Utah is a great idea. The town is also a popular base for off-roaders who come for the annual Moab Jeep Safari. Several tourists have been attracted to Utah due to its mild winters and enjoyable summer.

For people who live near Seattle, a guided climb up Mount Rainier can also be considered. Mount Rainier is a very popular spot for hiking, photography and camping. Families or lovers can also go to the Great Lakes, where one can take a charter sailing or fishing trip.

Weekend getaways are very popular for families planning to go on a vacation. There are several family-oriented locales that both adults and children will surely enjoy. Families can partake in activities to help each one reconnect with each other.

Some things to consider for a successful and fun weekend getaway are the proximity of the destination, the means of transportation and any special needs that may be required during the trip. Since the vacation is just for the weekend, it is important that it is easy to go there so that precious weekend time will not be wasted during long travel time. Another thing that should be clear is how to get to the destination. In some cases people bring cars, however that could lead to problems with parking. Another option is using public transportation. As to special needs for the trip, some families bring their pets with them during trips. Provisions should be made for any pets as well at the lodge where tourists decide to say.

An All Inclusive Honeymoon In Barbados

May 14th, 2008 AndrewWatkins Posted in Travel | No Comments »

An all inclusive honeymoon in a top Barbados Luxury Hotel could be a dream, but what if you don’t like large impersonal hotels, and you want to be upmarket and all inclusive, and small, with historical connections, preferably with less than 30 rooms.

It seems a Mission Impossible, but after some research we came up with the Island Inn. It is a small all inclusive Hotel, housed in a former Rum Store for British Regiments, and dates back to 1804, and is now part of the historic Garrison Area in Bridgetown Barbados.

What we have here is the almost perfect all inclusive honeymoon hotel that ticks all the right boxes. It is quaint, simplicity in itself, and full of old world charm, and a lovely atmosphere to boot. The building has been restored as close as can be possible to its original appearance, and if you hate hustle and bustle, noise, and large hotels generally, then you will just fall in love with the Island Inn Hotel, even although it doesn’t look like much when you first see it!!

Every guestroom is unique, no box like structure this, and if this is your all inclusive honeymoon destination, then make sure your room is in the original historic building so you can experience the rich four poster mahogany beds wit the original exposed bricks. On the other hand if you want a larger room and traditional Caribbean furnishings, then opt for the newer block with patios opening onto the pool or the garden. Whatever you choose, and if this is your honeymoon then go for the original building, and feel part of the history. The rooms are lovely and clean with clean linen and towels every day.

What you are going to experience at the Island Inn Hotel is five star treatment at three star prices. A large part of this is down to the exceptional staff who are quite superb in their level of care, enthusiasm, and efficiency. In a small hotel as good as this you very quickly seem to become part of their family. It is the delight they have that you chose their hotel in which they have great pride. You just never get this in a large hotel, and also in a boutique hotel like the Island Inn Hotel, it seems the guests take the time to chat, and get to know each other. It must be something to do with like minded people.

With so much building going on in Barbados, there is a concern that the island will be spoiled. Insofar as the Island Inn Hotel is concerned this will never happen because of its situation in the historic Garrison Area. You are two minutes walk away from a lovely beach, which is both quiet and safe, and only noisy at the weekends on a Sunday when the locals enjoy family time on the beach.

You will enjoy the restaurant not only because of the freshness of the ingredients, the quality of the chef, and delightfully waitress service to the table. Far too many supposedly five star establishments now only have buffet, and then it is a mad rush.

The whole ethos of the Island Inn Hotel was one of Caribbean charm. The all inclusive element works very well, and is quite unobtrusive, with no idiots trying noisily to drink themselves into a coma, because it just isn’t that sort of hotel.

If I were choosing a Barbados Luxury Hotel for my honeymoon, I’d pick the boutique Island Inn Hotel, wit the bonus of all inclusive every time.

A Great Family Vacation On Mullins Beach Barbados

May 14th, 2008 AndrewWatkins Posted in Travel | No Comments »

Don’t make any decisions about your Barbados Holiday until you read about great Barbados Accommodation on Mullins Bay.

Your Barbados Holiday will be made or broken by the choice you make over your Barbados Accommodation. If you are a family it would make a lot of sense to choose to stay on Mullins Beach, and to choose the Legend Garden Condos.

Mullins Beach is world famous, and a lovely white sand next to a beautiful turquoise sea. Everyone can have a good time here. Whether you are young or even middle age lovers looking to escape for a couple of weeks, or you might just be a sunworshipper. It is ideal for families as it offers every conceivable kind of water sport, either motorised or driven by sail or pedal power. You can be above the water or beneath, on the beach playing cricket or volleyball, or just watching the world go by.

The Legend Garden Condos is a few hundred feet away from this enchanting place, and is a small, almost quaint property consisting of nine apartments, with a great and very personal service, which in turn means a lot of returning guests.

It needs to be made clear that Legend Garden Condos is not a hotel, so there are no meals at all, but you will have a fully equipped kitchen, and there is a swimming pool. There are one and two bedroomed condos and they are all slightly different from each other. Although the Legend Garden Condos isn’t on the beach, it’s virtually on the beach, but very private and hidden up a drive in the trees, and the beach is at the end of the drive. The trees are a real feature of this Barbados Accommodation, and you may well find yourself eating coconuts, mangos and apples of the trees, listening to the chorus of tree frogs, and watching the monkeys and their antics

For those people who argue that a holiday like this is just self catering with a posh name, you are very wrong, because what you get here at Legend Garden Condos are the hosts Delia and Bird, and their staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble, and they are completely and brilliantly very much hands on. Anything you want to know or do, then they’ll fix it for you, and will definitely make your Barbados Holiday.

So you have this great accommodation, there is still the vexing question of catering, and here there is a wonderful solution at lunchtime. A white van appears at the gate every day excepting Sunday and you can buy a very good Barbados lunch for not much money. Turn right at the gate and there is a 24 hour garage supermarket for drinks and snack food. There is no shortage of restaurants and bars around the Mullins Beach area for meals and refreshments.

One of the great things about staying at a place like Legend Garden Condos where there are no meals is that it makes you get out and about. Staying in a resort complex, many families never leave and so they miss a great deal. It is important for childrens’ education , that they see how people live in different countries, and they get to experience the people, their culture, their food. Buses in Barbados may be a little scary at times, but they are a great adventure too, inexpensive, and the conductors are very helpful, so take the opportunity to explore, and as you pass one of the exclusive hotels, take the time to feel sorry for the cocooned guests who could be anywhere, whilst you are experiencing life.

To finish, Legend Garden Condos will give you a real Barbados Holiday, and an experience you will treasure.

A Luxury Family Vacation On Barbados

May 14th, 2008 AndrewWatkins Posted in Travel | No Comments »

Why you should seriously consider choosing the Hilton Hotel Barbados for your next luxury family vacation.

The Hilton Hotel Barbados could give you and your family a wonderful couple of weeks, a real luxury family vacation on what some people describe as the best beach on Barbados Island. The Hilton is actually situated on a peninsula, and whilst there are places you can walk to a hire car would be advised

One recurring problem with hotels is that if you want to go upmarket, then it is generally not really suitable for children, but the Hilton Barbados is a notable exception. Here you get the atmosphere and the facilities of a top luxury hotel and the children are very welcome. In fact atmosphere for a large hotel is surprisingly quiet and intimate, so don’t be put off if you prefer small hotels.

The suites in the Hilton are huge, and they all have a view to die for. If you can, then get accommodated at the Executive Level as you get free breakfast and drinks and eats in the evening, plus free internet access, and all these normal costs can add up over a fortnight.

The beach at the Hilton Hotel Barbados is stunning, and surprisingly more people will choose the pool, so you may have to reserve deck chairs. As the beach has quite a surf running, if you have small children you may prefer the safety of the pool, which by the way is excellent.

If you want seats and umbrellas on the beach the staff are more than happy to oblige.

For older teenagers they will find many surfers, boogie boarders, and body surfers, so if they are so inclined will be occupied happily for hours, although they will need to go further down the beach off the hotel area.

For the active families golf can be arranged, and there are catamaran excursions, where snorkelling is available. If you are lucky there could be just your family on the boat, which makes you feel as if you own it, especially as they give you lunch as well!!

If there is a disappointment with the Hilton, it is the restaurant food, which seems a bit pricey and not great value, but happily there are a good many choices on Barbados insofar as food is concerned.

You may care to check out some or all of the following, although you should find out about the restaurant food for yourself, and not necessarily take other folk’s word for it.

You might try the Brown Sugar, within walking distance serving good island food in a very nice setting, and the service here is very good. Service at table in restaurants, even drinks service in Barbados can be painfully slow.

David’s Place at St Lawrence Gap has good service, again local food, and it sits right on the water which is beautiful.

One of the main must do things is to visit Oisten’s on a Friday evening. The numbers of people there to buy and eat fish fresh from the sea, has to be seen to be believed. You eat off paper plates, and if you want to know which of the stalls sells the best seafood, then look at the longest queues.

The Hilton Hotel Barbados is good for a luxury family vacation, but it is slightly isolated, making a car essential. There’s plenty to do, and an excellent kids club for the younger children with very trustworthy staff.

Andrew Watkins is the owner of Barbados Vacation Spots as well as being a contributor on occasions to Worldwide Vacation Spots and he thinks it would be worth your while to check out Caribbean Vacation Spots especially any information you can find about Barbados which is the destination he likes the best.
